What stays on your device

Sangat keeps your preferences (theme, tempo, taal, Sa, instrument volumes), your saved practice sessions, your riyaz record — how long you played each day, and for each swara how often Listen heard it in sur, low or high, and how often your own call agreed — and the recordings of your riyaz (below), on your device: in the browser's local storage on the web, in the app's own private storage on a phone. If you sign in, it also keeps your sign-in token and a cached copy of your membership status there. None of it is uploaded anywhere. Clearing the site's data, or uninstalling the app, removes all of it; signing in again brings Pro back.

Your account

An account is created only when you sign in, which the app asks for only to buy Sangat Pro or to bring a purchase to another device. It holds your email address, the times you signed in, and a membership record: which plan, when it was bought, and when it renews or ends. There is no password — you sign in with a code emailed to you — and nothing else is asked or stored. The account service is hosted by Supabase; the record is used for one thing, deciding whether Pro is on, and never for marketing.

Deleting the account is a button in Settings, in the apps and on the web. It removes the account and every record under it at once. The payment providers keep their own transaction records for as long as the law requires them to.

The microphone

Find my Sa listens only after you start it, and stops when you stop it, leave the screen, or put the app in the background. Each buffer of audio is analysed for pitch on your device and then discarded — never recorded, never stored, never transmitted. If you save a take, what is kept is the melody it heard — a list of notes and times, like a page of notation, not the sound of your voice — and that stays on your device like everything else. Declining the microphone permission turns off Find my Sa and Listen, and nothing else.

Your riyaz recordings. While Listen is on, what the microphone hears — your voice, and the room around it — is recorded so that you can hear your riyaz back when you finish. The recording is written only to your device: the browser's own storage on the web, the app's private folder on a phone. Every sitting is kept on your device: your last three on the free plan, up to a thousand with Sangat Pro, and past that the oldest makes room for the new one. A sitting kept as a Pro member stays if the membership ends. You can delete any of them in Sessions. Recordings are never uploaded or sent to us. The one way a recording leaves your device is Share, and only when you tap it: a copy of your riyaz, or of one line with the harmonium’s call before it, goes to your phone’s share sheet with a line saying what you sang and a link to sing it too, or is saved as a file, for you to share where you choose; Sangat never sees it or where it goes. Clearing the site's data, or uninstalling the app, removes them. With Listen off, nothing is recorded.

Listen works the same way while you sing with the harmonium, with one difference: it keeps the last few seconds of audio in the device's memory, so that Hear yours can play your last held note back, followed by the harmonium's. That audio is never written to storage and never sent anywhere, and it is forgotten when you stop listening, or leave or close the app.

Payments

On the web, Sangat Pro is sold by Dodo Payments as merchant of record. They receive and process your payment details and your email (for the receipt), handle taxes and invoicing, and are the name on your statement. We receive the order details — never your card or UPI number. The checkout carries your account id so the purchase can be matched to your account, and Dodo tells the account service when a subscription starts, renews, lapses or is refunded — nothing more.

Analytics

The website and web app use PostHog, set up without cookies, to understand how Sangat is used and where it falls short: which pages are opened and from where, when play is pressed, when sound is first played and for how long, how long the app was open, which Sa, taal and raga the stage was set to and which of those settings were changed, which language the app is shown in, which raga pages are read and which paltas are chosen, when the guide's Listen is used and how many of the notes it judged were in tune (counts only, never the audio), when the riyaz view and its review are opened and whether a sitting was heard back, kept or shared (never the recording), when Find my Sa is used and which Sa it found, which steps of First steps in sur are started, left or passed, with how many marks and, when a sung turn went unheard, why: no voice, the speaker louder, or too brief (counts only), when the app is offered for your home screen and what was chosen, whether a page opened inside Instagram was sent on to your own browser, when the Pro screen is opened, a plan chosen, a sign-in code asked for and checkout opened, and when the app hits an error so it can be fixed. That is usage, not identity: it is never joined to your name or account, nor to your email unless you leave it with feedback (below), and there is no cross-site tracking, no session recording, and no advertising.

A random id kept in your browser's storage lets us tell a returning musician from a new one — the difference between "people try it once" and "people practise with it". It is a number, not you; clearing the site's data resets it. The phone apps run no analytics and no crash reporting.

Feedback. The speech bubble at the top of the web app opens a short form, also run by PostHog. What you write there, and your email if you choose to give it, is kept with that random id, along with the page you were on. We read it to fix and improve Sangat, and use the email only to write back to you. To have a message deleted, email us.

What does not happen

• No password, and no account at all unless you buy.
• No advertising, no advertising identifier, no trackers.
• No sale or sharing of personal data.
• No recording of your voice ever leaves your device unless you share it yourself: your riyaz recordings stay on it.
• No location, contacts, photos or files access. The phone apps ask for the microphone (Find my Sa and Listen), notifications (playback controls while in the background) and vibration (the optional pulse on sam), and nothing else.

Your rights

Most of your data lives on your own device. Your account and everything under it can be deleted from Settings at any time, or by email. For anything payment-related — invoices, deletion of your order record, anything under the GDPR or India's DPDP Act — email and it will be sorted with the provider directly.

Children

Sangat is not directed at children. Beyond the optional account and any feedback you choose to send, it collects nothing from anyone, children included.

Changes

If a future version of Sangat does something this page does not describe, this page changes first, with the effective date above.
