Every raga in Sangat, by the notes it uses going up and coming down. Ragas with exactly the notes you chose come first, then ragas with those notes and others, the fewest others first. The notes you chose are lit in each row.

How to use it

  1. Switch on the notes you know.Sa is always on. Press a swara to add it, and press it again to take it off. Komal Re, Ga, Dha and Ni sit under their shuddha notes, and tivra Ma under Ma.
  2. Read the list.Ragas with exactly your notes come first. Under them are the ragas that have all your notes and some others, the closest first.
  3. Listen.Press play beside a raga to hear its aroha and avaroha on the harmonium, at your Sa, over the tanpura. Set your Sa in the bar above the notes.
  4. Go on.Press a raga’s name to read its page, or to open it in Sangat, where the harmonium plays its lines for you to sing back.

Notes alone do not make a raga. Ragas with the same notes differ in how they move, which notes they rest on and when they are sung. Use the list to narrow it down, then listen.

How do I find a raga from its notes?

Switch on the notes you know in the raga finder above. Sa is always in, and komal Re, Ga, Dha and Ni and tivra Ma each have their own switch. The list keeps the ragas that use all of those notes, with the ragas that use exactly those notes first. Press play beside any of them to hear it go up and down at your Sa.

Which raag has komal Ga, Dha and Ni?

With Re, Ma and Pa shuddha: Adana, Asavari, Darbari Kanada, Jaunpuri and Kaunsi Kanada, all of Asavari thaat. Bhairavi, Bilaskhani Todi and Komal Rishabh Asavari have the same three with komal Re too. Malkauns has them with Ma, and no Re or Pa.

Which ragas have Dha as the vadi?

In Sangat’s list, shuddha Dha is the vadi of Alhaiya Bilawal, Bilawal, Deshkar, Hameer, Hindol and Sohini. Komal Dha is the vadi of Asavari, Bhairav, Bhupal Todi, Bilaskhani Todi, Gunkali, Gurjari Todi, Jaunpuri, Komal Rishabh Asavari, Todi and Vibhas. Books do not always agree on a raga’s vadi.

Can two ragas have the same notes?

Yes, often. Bhupali and Deshkar both use Sa, Re, Ga, Pa and Dha. Bhupali’s main note, its vadi, is Ga, and it is sung in the early night. Deshkar’s is Dha, and it is a morning raga. A raga is its notes and the way it moves between them: its aroha, avaroha and pakad.
